Key Resources and Sociocultural Developments in the Iberian Chalcolithic

The Iberian Peninsula displays extreme geographic and climatic differences, resulting in very different local preconditions. To what extent are these responsible for the heterogeneous social and cultural development in different regions observable during the 3rd mill. BC? To answer this question it is necessary to identify what was considered to be a resource and to determine how these resources were valuated. This book aims at investigating and reconstructing the dynamics and the diversity of the sociocultural manifestations on the Iberian Peninsula in relation to the use of resources in a comprehensive way during the Chalcolithic. In general regional overviews and detailed studies of the use of infrastructure, raw materials or social relations the possibilities to identify key resources as factors in these processes are explored

Testigos de piedra: estelas armadas entre el Tajo internacional y el Duero, Península Ibérica

Pocos territorios en Europa reúnen la concentración de estelas en piedra que se documentan entre el Tajo y el Duero. La arqueología asegura amplias posibilidades extractivas, con un claro centro neurálgico en el actual distrito de Castelo Branco. Desde los primeros descubrimientos de piezas tan singulares como las de São Martinho, hasta el registro actual, la variedad y diacronía de estelas y menhires en piedra resulta excepcional en el contexto ibérico y europeo. La tradicional lectura, que alejaba los viejos menhires de las estelas del Bronce Final, queda muy matizada ante el uso de referencias temáticas y técnicas semejantes. En este texto aportamos otro argumento a sumar a esas similitudes, con la reutilización de los antiguos soportes como base material para la generación de las estelas del Bronce Final. Las imágenes humanas que se grabaron en estas memorias en piedra expresan narrativas sociales elaboradas. Las secuencias gráficas que argumentamos aseguran el papel político de estas piezas como justificaciones materiales de pasados ancestrales. Indudablemente albergan relatos orales sobre la relación entre los viejos ancestros y los nuevos líderes, justificando el orden del entramado económico asociado al control de la extracción y comercio del metal.Few places in Europe concentrate as many stone stelae as the area between the Tagus and the Douro. Archaeology has shown the ample possibilities for metal mining, the modern region of Castelo Branco being the epicentre in the area. From the first discoveries of such unique objects as the São Martinho stelae to the current record, the variety and diachronicity of stone stelae and menhirs is exceptional on the Iberian and European scales. The traditional interpretation that differentiated between the old menhirs and Late Bronze Age stelae has been nuanced by the evidence of similar themes and techniques. Another argument presented here is the use of the old stones as the basic material to produce the Late Bronze Age stelae. Human images carved on these memorial stones express elaborate social narratives. The graphic sequences described here demonstrate the ‘political’ role of these stones and material justification of ancestral pasts. They were undoubtedly imbued with oral tales about old ancestors and new leaders, to justify the order of the economic system associated with mining and metal trade.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades 2018-099405-BI0

Advanced megalithic constructions of the inner tagus basin. The Cáceres group

Una versión resumida de este trabajo se presentó como Ponencia a las II Jornadas de Arqueología de Extremadura (Mérida 2000).Los autores ponen de manifiesto la riqueza de expresiones megaliticas de todo el actual territorio cacereño atravesado por el Tajo. Defienden la larga secuencia de un megalitismo que con fechas desde el V milenio cal BC. continua realizándose hasta la Edad del Bronce. Las necrópolis de monumentos de pequeño tamaño, entre las que se detectan autenticas cistas, plantean el uso de estas referencias a la tradición de los ancestros en el marco de las sociedades metalúrgicas del Tajo interior. Con ello asumen que los procesos de individualización no se constatan de modo amplio con el campaniforme, sino que se van instalando paulatinamente en contextos sociales con tendencia a la jerarquización desde el Neolítico Medio, como demuestra el mismo sistema de utilización de los sepulcros colectivos.The authors, manifiest the wealth of the megalithic expressions of the hole recent land of Cáceres, crossed by the Tagus river. The Necropolis of monuments of small size, in which are detected authentic stones cist that reflect the use of these references to the ancient tradition in the area of metal groups of the inland Tagus. This asumes that the individuality process are not confirmed deeply with Beaker, but are stablishing slowly into social contexts to trend to hierarchy from Middle Neolithic, as shows the same system of use of colective tombs

MARCADORES GRÁFICOS Y TERRITORIOS TRADICIONALES EN LA PREHISTORIA DE LA PENÍNSULA IBÉRICA

The close relationship between the position of the graphics and the economic territories of the groups are diachronically tested. The world of the Paleolithic hunters is not only the darkness of the caves, but the mountains, valleys and rivers outdoor, whose symbolic references are engraved and painted on the stones. They are pioneers in the graphic def inition of the places that belong to their daily world. The recurrence in the decoration of the same sites has the f inding with the presence of post-palaeolithic graphics. It presents the major sites as outdoor display of traditional territories, whose boundaries are known for joing the group, and whose use and transit are insured by the symbols of the ancestors.La estrecha relación entre la posición de las grafías y los territorios económicos de los grupos que las produjeron se constata diacrónicamente. El mundo de los cazadores paleolíticos no es sólo el de la oscuridad de las cavernas, sino el de sierras, valles y ríos al aire libre cuyas referencias simbólicas han quedado grabadas y pintadas en soportes rocosos. Son ellos los pioneros en la definición gráf ica de los lugares que forman parte de su universo cotidiano. La recurrencia en la decoración de los mismos enclaves tiene su constatación con la presencia de grafías postpaleolíticas. Presenta los grandes yacimientos al aire libre como la visualización de territorios tradicionales, aquéllos cuya delimitación se conoce por formar parte del grupo, y cuyo tránsito y uso está asegurado por los símbolos de los ancestros

Anthropomorphic image as origins of ancestor´s”Caves”. The stele -menhir of Anta do Telhal, Arraiolos, Évora, Portugal

It is a fact that in Europe menhirs, stelae and statues and their origin, configuration, and maintenance in funerary megalithic spaces play an important role. The wealth and variety of antrompomorphic expressions in the Portuguese Alentejo form an interesting case study. The documentation of the engraved Anta de Telhal stele-menhir opens a new line of investigation. This is useful to reflect on the connectivity between open and closed architectures in Southern European megalithism. The movements of stones between them indicate a longue durée process, of which the manipulation of images on the ancestral stones is one of the clearest arguments for the creation of the past’s ideology
